Pauline, a mayor with history

We begin our review of the curiosities of Super Mario Odyssey by talking about an iconic character from this title: Pauline, the mayor of New Donk . You may not know it, but this was not the first appearance of this character in a Nintendo game; And, although she has subsequently been seen in other plumber games such as Mario Tennis Aces  or Mario Strikers: Battle League Football , the relationship between the mayor and Mario goes back a long way, specifically from Donkey Kong .

In the title released in 1981, Pauline was kidnapped by the ape , so Mario, or Jumpman, as he was known at that time, had to do everything possible to rescue her. Between 1981 and 2017, Pauline has also appeared in several games in the  Mario vs. Donkey Kong We could say, without fear of being wrong, that the plumber and the mayor are old friends.

Have we been to New Donk before?

Closely related to the previous section is what we are going to tell you, Nintendo fans. As we’ve already mentioned, Pauline made her first appearance in Donkey Kong, but, with Mario and Donkey’s permission, she might not be the only one of hers. And in this title she takes place in a city called Big Ape City; If we take into account that Pauline appears in the game, as well as the obvious nod to him in Super Mario Odyssey, we could say that Big Ape City and New Donk are the same city .

In fact, in New Donk itself there is a small Easter Egg that could corroborate what we mentioned, and that perhaps not everyone will have seen. If we look at the license plate of the city’s taxis , we can see that the number that appears is 1981 , the year in which, as we have said, the Donkey Kong game went on sale.

Jump up, Superstar!

Super Mario Odyssey was presented at E3 2017, in a spectacular trailer that showed not only all the potential that the title had, but also a song that, even today, is still heard: Jump up, Superstar!  With more than 8 million views, the song became a success, which made it reach other platforms such as iTunes. We simply love:

The years go by for everyone, even for our beloved Mario

The most famous plumber in the world of video games remains in shape, there is no doubt, but the truth is that he is already a few years old. Nintendo is aware of this, which is why in Super Mario Odyssey a few gray hairs were added to the character’s design . By zooming in on the conceptual illustration of the protagonist in very high resolutions, it is possible to identify them in his hair, above his left ear:

Bowser’s memories

There is no doubt that this game is full of winks and references to other Nintendo titles . One of the funniest, and which undoubtedly deserves to be on our list of Super Mario Odyssey curiosities, is what happens when Mario throws Cappy at Bowser’s head. At that moment, and just before being able to control the plumber’s number one enemy, we can see the memories that Bowser has of the previous adventures he had with Mario, such as what happened in Super Mario 64.

Mr. Game & Watch is here too

At this point, we have no doubt: Nintendo loves to include references to other games in its work, and Super Mario Odyssey was no different. In addition to the continuous references to other games in the saga, we can also find Easter Eggs from other great titles. Without going any further, when we play the mini-games, such as the Koopas or Mundoglobo races, the character that appears in the logo is Mr. Game & Watch , present on the homonymous consoles.

If you want to know more about Game & Watch , here we review its history.

Captain Toad’s Shops

This reference is quite obvious, but it is worth including it in the list of Super Mario Odyssey curiosities. And, in several of the worlds that we can travel with our beloved plumber throughout the game, we find a store run by another mythical character from the great N: Captain Toad . But the wink is not only here, but said store is nothing other than the ship carried by the famous Toad in Super Mario Galaxy; wink upon wink.

Taking this into account, it is not surprising that there are references to Super Mario Odyssey in the Super Mario movie .

The origin of the mariachi costume

Throughout our adventure, we can change Mario’s suit. One of the ones we can find is the mariachi costume, which you can see below:

Well, the origin of this outfit goes back years, specifically to 1986, when a Super Mario musical film came out . In this film, lasting approximately one hour,  our favorite plumbers had to rescue Princess Peach from the evil Bowser to the rhythm of music. At one point in the film, Mario dressed in a suit very similar to the one we saw in the Switch title:

The word Game Over is “forbidden”

Something common in platform games like Super Mario is running out of lives and not being able to advance further in the adventure. When this happens, it is common to see a screen with the two words most feared by every video game fan: Game Over. Well, in Super Mario Odyssey, when our health counter reached zero, this message did not appear; Instead, we only lose 10 coins and start playing again.

In homage to previous deliveries

One of the new features of Super Mario Odyssey are the moons that are spread throughout the different worlds, and that came to replace the classic stars of our beloved plumber’s 3D games.

Behind the achievement of each of these moons, there is a most curious reference. As you can see in the image above these lines, when it comes to getting a moon, Mario celebrates by making the victory sign, raising his open hand or closed fist. These gestures are not casual, but are a nod to the postures he performed in Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy, respectively.

And that’s it for our review of the curiosities of Super Mario Odyssey, nintenderos. What do you think? Don’t hesitate to leave your opinion in the comments.
