Do you experience a lot of stress and tension?

Do you worry a lot or suffer from negative thoughts?

If you recognize this, it is time to find inner peace.

When you think of inner peace, you may immediately think of yogis or hermits who meditate for a whole day in a secluded place.

I can hear you thinking: of course these people can relax perfectly and find inner peace. They don’t live the hectic life I lead at all.

You can immediately erase from your mind the image of yogis and hermits who lead an unworldly existence, because inner peace is available to everyone.

How exactly does that work? You will know this after reading this article, because I will give you 5 redeeming tips for more inner peace.

“What if I’m not on time? Imagine that they are walking home themselves and something happens to them.”

You feel guilty because of your busy job and you would prefer to work less hard.

“But what if I don’t earn enough? I might no longer be able to pay my mortgage. Where should we live then? You hear so many stories of people who find themselves in a painful situation.”

You are firmly convinced that relaxation and rest are not allowed to you. You often become anxious about what the future might bring.

Because of your worrying you live in constant stress. Your body and mind are in a constant state of readiness and you are overstressed .

You have difficulty thinking clearly, you can hardly concentrate, you often forget things and you are convinced that your head is like a sieve.

Well… your head is not a sieve at all, but it is just too full. There can no longer be any rational thoughts because all your negative and irrational thoughts are growing like weeds in your head.

That feeling of uncertainty, uneasiness and fear of what could happen – no matter how unrealistic these thoughts are – are the most unpleasant emotions you can experience as a human being.

In order to properly understand what inner peace means, I would first like to explain to you what inner peace is not.

What is inner peace not?

One of my students came to visit me because she had various physical complaints due to stress . She was eager to get rid of the stress in her life, but she also immediately stated that she was not looking for inner peace.

I thought it was a somewhat strange statement, so I asked her what she understood by inner peace.

She told me that she was afraid that inner peace would make her passive because she wanted to remain active and driven. She also enjoyed the things she did and feared that inner peace would cause them to disappear from her life.

Such an attitude shows a lack of understanding of what inner peace exactly is.

Inner peace is not a state of passivity. It doesn’t make life boring at all.

On the contrary! Inner peace makes you more aware, more vital and much happier.

It helps you to live your life to the fullest.

What is inner peace?

But what is a state of inner peace?

Inner peace does not have a ‘one-size-fits-all’ definition.

Inner peace is often defined as a state of physical and mental calm despite many stressors. It means being at peace with yourself and your life situation.

In life you have to deal with relationship situations, work situations, financial situations, health situations, home situations, etc… All these things form your life situation.

You will probably agree with me that all these situations rarely always go well for you.

You may be in good financial shape, but you are concerned about your health. You have a balanced relationship, but you experience too much stress at work.

That is normal and everyone experiences this at some point in life.

  • Life constantly challenges us.
  • Are these challenges nice? Not at all!
  • But these challenges are necessary!

Every day you experience different feelings and emotions

Precisely because life challenges you, you realize that it is not the world around you that makes you happy. Happiness comes from a deeper place within yourself that is inextricably linked to the essence of who you are.

You got that promotion you’ve been dreaming about for so long. You are happy!

The trip you had been looking forward to for so long is cancelled. You feel unhappy!

One day you feel happy and the next day you feel down. This is the continuous course of life. Through life you are constantly torn between being happy and being unhappy.

Beyond these superficial feelings of happiness and unhappiness lies something deeper and that is inner peace.

When you are connected to that deeper part of yourself, emotional extremes do not occur.

You experience a peace that is not negatively affected by your life situation because you accept things from your deeper self.

Why is it so important to find inner peace?

Inner peace helps you focus on the things that are important to you. This will make you worry less and have fewer negative thoughts.

It ensures that you have a calmer and more balanced view of life.

By feeling relaxed and internally calm, you can deal with stress better so that mental and physical complaints caused by stress reduce.

Inner peace creates less drama, less worries, less stress and positive thoughts.

  • Your energy and motivation to tackle things increase.
  • You can remain peaceful and calm in any situation.
  • It helps to avoid being overworked .
  • You deal better with emotions such as depression .
  • You are less likely to be misled and influenced by comments from others.
  • Inner peace helps you relax your body and mind.
  • You are more successful in maintaining your composure in stressful situations .
  • Your life will look a lot brighter.
  • All negative aspects of society have less influence on you.
  • Sleep problems due to stressdecrease, making you function better

Inner peace and relaxation are crucial for your happiness and well-being!

If you have not yet found this inner peace, the tips below will certainly take you a long way in your search for inner peace.

5 Tips for more inner peace

Even if you lead an ordinary life, if you have a busy job, if you are married, if you have children, if you have to juggle your time to keep everything under control, you can reach a state of inner peace.

I explain how to do that below:

Tip 1:  Accept that some things are out of your control

Life is simply unpredictable. Sometimes challenges come your way that cause you stress and make you anxious.

It is very normal to worry about the illness of someone you love. Just like it’s normal to be angry when you’re fired.

However, the more you focus on these feelings, the more they start to disturb your peace and the worse the situation in your mind becomes.

But ignoring these feelings and just getting on with your life doesn’t help either. Suppressed emotions can become so intense that they completely take over you.

Acceptance, on the other hand, does make a difference.

This does not mean that you should passively accept what life brings you. It’s okay to think about things you have no control over, as long as you do so in a rational way.

Sometimes the ‘worst’ thing that happens to you is essential for personal growth.

What do you learn from the situation you found yourself in? How does what you have no control over make you stronger?

Tip 2: Clear your head

Your room is cluttered with all kinds of things. You’ve gotten used to your crowded room, no matter how uncomfortable and unpleasant it is.

You probably know how difficult it is to find something in a room full of stuff. If the room is neat and tidy, you will immediately find what you are looking for.

One day you decide to clean your room. You take everything out of your room and empty it completely. The room seems much larger, you can move more freely and you can find everything easily.

Now compare this room with the state of your mind. Your mind is full of thoughts, fears, worries and endless worries. There is no room at all for new and different thoughts. And you cannot find the inner peace you are looking for.

The more unnecessary and useless thoughts you remove, the clearer you will see everything.

Inner peace is like a clean and spacious room without unnecessary, old or broken things. In a clean mind you will more easily find what you were looking for: inner peace.

Tip 3:  Live in the present

Most people are never fully present in the present. According to Eckhart Tolle, author of the book ‘The Power of Now’ and spiritual teacher, most people subconsciously believe that ‘the next moment’ is much more important than the present.

By focusing on this you miss your whole life because life is never ‘not now’.

If you are not (or less) concerned about the future, you make contact with your inner self, which causes you to experience inner peace.

Gradually you discover that you are not who you ‘think’ you are. And by this Tolle means your negative thoughts about both the past and the present.

You are not your negative thoughts about things from the past that you feel guilty about. You are also not your negative thoughts about the future.

Eckhart Tolle shows that you only really live in clear consciousness. You don’t have to look far for this. You carry the core of it within yourself. It starts with being quiet and focusing on that one moment where the future and the past do not keep you from who you really are.

Tip 4:  Make time for yourself

Spending too much time alone can make you lonely, causing you to fall prey to worry and negative thoughts. Of course, that doesn’t promote your inner peace at all.

But scientific  research shows that by spending the right amount of time alone you can find inner peace in this hectic world.

Making space for healthy solitude leads to a deeper sense of contentment over time.

Being alone for a while makes you think about your personal values. You get a new feeling for your own needs and what you find important in life.

Life has become a competition in many areas: we all want a nice job with an attractive salary, we want to be admired for our big house or our big car, we compete for the highest place on the social ladder…

We are lived too much and too often by others and we ‘must’ meet certain expectations.

The less you feel that you have to meet certain social needs, the richer your inner self becomes and the easier it is for you to find inner peace.

Tip 5:  Forgive yourself and others

Feeling hurt and angry when you are wronged are understandable and completely natural reactions.

But feelings of resentment keep you from finding inner peace. Holding on to these feelings takes a lot of emotional energy.

According to a 2016  study , forgiveness reduces stress and negative thoughts.

By the way, forgiveness is not about the other person. It’s about making peace with yourself.

Forgiveness is saying, “I know what happened. I know what I did. I know what the other person did. What can I do now to heal and move on?”

Forgiving others reduces resentment and anger, making you feel much calmer and more peaceful.

The same goes for yourself. Worrying about your behavior or decisions you’ve made doesn’t erase what happened. This will only leave you stuck in self-blame and regret.

Self-forgiveness is often more difficult than forgiving others. It is important to remember that what you have done in the past does not define you. What does define you is what you have learned from the past and what you do from now on.

Be consistent in making healthy decisions, commit to positive behavior and be genuine with yourself. If you succeed in this, you are well on your way to finding inner peace.
