Felix Hausdorff was a German mathematician considered one of the fathers of modern Topology . He has also contributed to other fields of mathematics, such as Measurement Theory and Functional Analysis .

Life

Son of the Jewish merchant Louis Hausdorff (1843-1896), Felix Hausdorff studied at the University of Leipzig , where he was a professor until 1910 , when he moved to the University of Bonn . From 1912 he was a professor at the University of Greifswald until he returned to Bonn in 1921 . In mid- 1941 , the Jews of Bonn began to be deported to Endenich and later transferred to the extermination camps. Although Hausdorff had German nationality before 1914 , he suffered the same fate and, after him, his wife and his sister-in-law. On January 26 , 1942 , the three decided to commit suicide by overdose of veronal .

Hausdorff published philosophical and literary works under the pseudonym Paul Mongré . The first of these, from 1897 , Sant’ Ilario. Thoughts from the landscape of Zarathustra . The second, from 1898 , was Chaos in cosmic selection , a critique of metaphysics based on Hausdorff’s confrontation with Nietzsche ‘s idea of ​​eternal recurrence .

In the years 1906 – 1909 he focused primarily on his work on ordered sets. He proved in 1914 what is today known in his honor as Hausdorff’s maximal principle (also as Kuratowski ‘s lemma ). This principle is an alternative formulation to Zorn’s lemma , which states that in any partially ordered set, all fully ordered subsets are contained in a maximal fully ordered subset. It is also one of the many results equivalent to Ernst Zermelo ‘s axiom of choice .
