How to Set Up or Disable Autorun in Windows 11

To set up or disable Autorun in Windows 11, you can follow these steps. Autorun and Autoplay are features in Windows that automatically execute or suggest an action when a new device or media is detected. Here’s how to manage these settings:

To Disable Autorun/Autoplay:

  1. Open Settings: Press the Windows key + I to open the Settings app.
  2. Navigate to Devices: In the Settings window, click on “Bluetooth & devices” from the sidebar.
  3. Select AutoPlay: Scroll down and click on “AutoPlay” in the list of options.
  4. Toggle AutoPlay: There will be a toggle at the top of the AutoPlay settings page. Turn this toggle off to disable AutoPlay entirely.

To Customize Autorun/Autoplay:

If you want to customize how Autorun/Autoplay behaves for different types of media or devices rather than disabling it entirely:

  1. Open AutoPlay Settings: Follow the steps above to navigate to the AutoPlay settings in the Windows Settings app.
  2. Customize Settings: Instead of disabling AutoPlay, you can scroll down to see options for different types of media and devices (like Removable Drive, Memory Card, etc.). You can click the dropdown menu next to each item to select an action that Windows should take when it detects that type of media. Options typically include “Open folder to view files”, “Ask me every time”, and specific software actions if applicable.

To Disable Autorun/Autoplay via Group Policy (Advanced Users):

For advanced users or system administrators who want to disable Autorun/Autoplay on a more granular level or across multiple machines:

  1. Open Group Policy Editor: Press Windows key + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter to open the Local Group Policy Editor. Note that Group Policy Editor is not available in Windows 11 Home Edition by default.
  2. Navigate to AutoPlay Policies: Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > AutoPlay Policies.
  3. Edit Policies: In the right pane, you will find policies like “Turn off AutoPlay” which you can edit to disable AutoPlay for all drives or specific types of drives. Double-click the policy, select “Enabled”, and choose the options that suit your requirements.

To Disable Autorun/Autoplay via Registry (Advanced Users):

Modifying the registry can have serious effects on your system if done incorrectly. Make sure to back up your registry before making any changes.

  1. Open Registry Editor: Press Windows key + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
  2. Navigate to the AutoRun Key: Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer.
  3. Modify or Create New Value: Right-click on the right pane, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it NoDriveTypeAutoRun. Double-click on it and set its value to disable AutoPlay features. The value to disable AutoPlay on all drives is 0xFF.

Remember to restart your computer for the changes to take effect. Be cautious when making changes to the Group Policy or Registry, as incorrect settings can cause system instability.
