Juan Carlos Tabío

Juan Carlos Tabío ( Havana , September 3 , 1943 – Havana, January 18 , 2021 ) was a Cuban screenwriter, film director and writer. He is the author of famous and popular well-known titles such as Se permuta , Plaff and Fresa y chocolate , co-directed with Titón (Tomás Gutiérrez Alea). In 2014 he was honored with the National Film Award . [2]

Biographical summary

In 1961, he began working at the ICAIC as a production assistant and later as an assistant director. In 1963, he made his first documentary and from that moment on he collaborated in the scripts of several important films of Cuban cinematography. [3]

Between 1963 and 1980 he made more than 30 documentaries. In 1983 he directed his first fiction feature film Se permuta . Between 1989 and 1990 he was a professor of screenwriting and film direction at the International School of Film and Television of San Antonio de los Baños . He taught scriptwriting, directing and playwriting workshops in several countries ( Mexico , Costa Rica , Panama ), his films have won national and international awards. [4]

In 2011 he began working on the feature film series project Seven Days in Havana , along with Benicio del Toro , the Spanish director Julio Medem , the Palestinian Elia Suleiman , the Argentine Pablo Trapero , the Argentine-French Gaspar Noé (1963-) and the Frenchman Laurent Cantet . [5]

In 2009 he had to stop working due to severe deafness. [6]

In the last decade of his life he suffered from cancer. [1]
