Magdalena Peñarredonda

Magdalena Peñarredonda Doley , nicknamed The Delegate . She was a Cuban heroine in the struggles for Cuban independence, appointed Delegate of the Cuban Revolutionary Party in Pinar del Río , by Lieutenant General Antonio Maceo y Grajales . Her portrait is part of the collection of drawings ” The whole country is in the woman ” made by Antonio Guerrero in tribute to patriotic women in the history of Cuba.

Biographical data

He was born in Quiebra Hacha , belonging to the Mariel municipality, Artemisa province , in the western part of Cuba, on July 22 , 1846 . Since 1893 he conspired against the Spanish colonial power. In the midst of grief over the murder of her brother at Spanish hands, she is exiled to New York .

Incorporation into the fight

In 1895 she was appointed Delegate of the Cuban Revolutionary Party in Pinar del Río, by Lieutenant General Antonio Maceo y Grajales . She collected money, medicines, distributed correspondence, carried out intelligence and information work, among other important actions in favor of the independence troops. In mid-1987 she was denounced for her revolutionary work and she was imprisoned in the Casa de las Recambios , being a defender of imprisoned women.

Magdalena was there until after the War of 1895 ended, a terrible place that was abandoned once the first North American military intervention was established in Cuba in 1899 .

When the war ends they grant her the Degree of Grace and name her Commander of the Liberation Army.

His revolutionary fiber and his love for the true freedom of his country, whose ideas of struggle, in the bush and in the Republic, he had heard from Martí’s own lips, would remain unscathed.

She was one of the most dynamic patriots of the War of Independence : revolutionary intellectual, brave journalist, conspirator and courier of the Liberation Army . Enrique José Varona is among the teachers of this distinguished woman.

Model of patience and patriotism , was the adjective that José Martí gave to Magdalena Peñarredonda Doley, who as a teenager began to write articles that she published in the newspaper El Criollo . Between 1912 and 1913, Ella Magdalena collaborated with the newspaper La Noche , where she focused on her campaigns in favor of suffrage for women and in defense of the outraged homeland.

A literary gathering was established in his home, attended by Manuel Sanguily , Alfredo Zayas and Julián del Casal .

An article of hers with a marked pro-independence nature forced her to leave Cuba and join emigration. At the outbreak of February 24 , Antonio Maceo appointed her delegate of the Sixth Corps of the Liberation Army.

He represented the patriots of the West before the Revolutionary Board of Havana . After the Titan fell , he continued to cooperate with his replacement, General Mayía Rodríguez . He suffered imprisonment, but his rebellious spirit never gave up.
