History

The Nadal Prize owes its name to Eugenio Nadal Gayal , professor of Literature and author of the book Cities of Spain, as well as numerous essays and articles. When his death occurred in 1944 , Destino magazine, of which he was editor-in-chief, established the award in his honor with the aim of discovering new literary values.

The first edition was held at the now defunct Chinese Café on La Rambla in Barcelona , since then it has been held every January 6 . The first writer awarded was the Spanish Carmen Laforet Díaz with the work Nada , which won in the last round over In the town there are new faces , by José María Álvarez Blázquez .

The award ceremony has been held since 1958 at the Ritz Hotel and since 1968 the Josep Pla Prize has also been awarded on the same evening to works of prose in Catalan without genre limitations. Currently the endowment of the Nadal Prize is €18,000. From its creation until 2009, a second prize of €6,000 was awarded to the finalist, replaced in 2010 by the Francisco Casavella Novel Prize .

In the 1990s, Ediciones Destino was acquired by Grupo Planeta and the Nadal Prize took a more commercial direction, being awarded to prominent and already consolidated figures in Spanish literature , and not to discovering new literary values, which until then had been its main objective. task.
